Matrix Fan Coil Units
The ground-breaking Matrix range incorporates an internally divided plenum with individual self-balancing fans. This allows highly accurate, finely tuned conditioned airflow management across the system without the need for Volume Control Dampers (VCDs). One fan per spigot allows quicker installation and commissioning, with air and water balancing completed remotely via a laptop.

What makes Matrix fan coil units different?
Ability by Dimplex Matrix fan coil units deliver a new level of precision and efficiency in fan coil unit design. Each unit incorporates multiple independently driven fans, with each fan capable of individual speed control. This allows highly accurate, finely tuned airflow management across the system.
What truly sets the Matrix design apart is its compartmentalised discharge plenum. Unlike traditional multi fan FCUs, where multiple fans feed into a shared chamber, the Matrix design isolates each fan into its own sub chamber; each serving a single duct and grille. This ensures that the air supplied to every grille comes from one dedicated fan, delivering unparalleled consistency and control. Because airflow to each grille is controlled solely by adjusting the speed of its corresponding fan, Matrix units eliminate the need for Volume Control Dampers (VCDs).
Matrix fan coil unit types
Matrix FCUs are available in one to five fan configurations, making them suitable for everything from small rooms to larger commercial spaces. The most commonly specified MAT270 Matrix fan coil unit is 270mm deep to suit a wide range of applications and is designed for use in exposed or concealed applications. Matrix FCUs come with a bespoke supply and fit controls strategy package. Whether you need pinpoint balancing or quiet, efficient operation, Matrix provides a modern, streamlined solution built for today’s ventilation and comfort demands.

Benefits of Ability Matrix fan coils
- Reduced commissioning time – the self-balancing fans and controls without the need for VCDs reduce commissioning time on site.
- Remote adjustments – Matrix allow water and air flow rates to be adjusted via the BMS rather than traditional manual adjustment via the ceiling saving time and labour costs.
- Space saving – one single Matrix unit conditioning five rooms frees up the space within each room that would have otherwise been taken up by an individual FCU.
- Improved aesthetics – one slimline Matrix unit serving up to five rooms minimises the visual impact of the HVAC strategy in apartments where aesthetic appearance takes a high priority.
- Quiet operation – the Matrix control strategy results in lower overall fan speeds and quieter operation than a conventional FCU positioned in each room.
- Energy efficient – the intelligent controls and use of low energy EC/DC fans use make Matrix fan coil units highly energy efficient.
- Wide project suitability – Matrix fan coils deliver high heating and cooling outputs with finely controlled air circulation and excellent acoustic performance to meet a wide variety of project requirements.
Witness testing: Supporting the specification of Ability Matrix fan coils
At Ability by Dimplex, we carry out comprehensive testing of our Matrix fan coil units at a dedicated facility in our factory in Poole, Dorset. We also offer witness testing, providing clients with complete transparency and confidence in the testing process and results relevant to their project.
Using the client’s drawings, we replicate ductwork layouts, grille locations and other system elements in our testing laboratory. By matching the Matrix fan coil unit selection, the testing results enable specifiers and contractors to validate design choices, confirm compliance with project requirements and fine-tune the fan coil system design before on-site installation and commissioning.
FCU testing includes:
- Acoustic testing: Confirms that sound levels meet specification, ensuring the acoustic performance of the installed fan coil units is as expected.
- Volumetric performance testing: Verifies airflow, air resistance and pressure drops to streamline fan coil commissioning.
- Thermal performance testing: Demonstrates heating and cooling outputs, fan coil performance and condensate management, ensuring the finished design delivers both comfort and efficiency.
All FCU testing is carried out using high-quality, regularly calibrated testing equipment. Once the Matrix fan coil testing is complete, clients receive a detailed report that includes test results, photographs, layout drawings and calibration certificates.
